Two vertically challenged manga protagonists go in. One comes out. Okay, it’s not that dramatic, but it is the topic for this week’s Flipped.

I’m actually pretty fond of Houshin. Mostly because of the last two thirds and the really quite disturbing implications of the big reveal at the end of series.

Do you know how many volumes it runs, Simon? I was kind of more inclined to read the novel than a whole lot more of the manga, but it does have a lot of elements in its favor. It’s just all those battle techniques and magical objects and stuff.

24 volumes, I think. It’s not brilliant or anything and more than a little confusing in places. But it is a little different from most shonen, in so far as the main character actually tends to out talk and out scheme people rather than beat them to a pulp and I mostly just like the idea behind the end of it all.

I liked his indirect approach a lot too. It was really novel compared to the “I’ve just got to learn to punch harder” standard.
