Head count

In this week’s Flipped, I take a look at one new series I liked primarily because of the art, and one that I liked kind of in spite of the art. Both series are from Del Rey, both have titles that start with the letter “p”, and both feature a strangely satisfyingly high body count.

Kudos to Del Rey for giving Parasyte another shot. It’s been a while since I first read the Mixx editions, but aside from some odd writing its just as good as I remember it being. I especially like that they’re giving us the thick edition this time around.
As for the art issue, Iwaaki’s style matured, but not like a Kosuke Fujishima has; even today his art isn’t going to amaze anyone. Serviceable is a good word. Still, really talented writer. I’ve read some of his current serial Histore, which has been fascinating thus far, and by the end of the first volume supposedly becomes mind-blowingly brilliant. Hopefully Parasyte sells well enough to warrant a license.

I’m planning to buy this, as I only got partway through the Mixx editions before running into problems with bits being out-of-print. Where does vol. 1 of the new edition get up to?

It stops at the point (and I’m going to try and put this text after some extra space for anyone who might consider it a spoiler) where…

… Shinichi’s parents head off on vacation.

I had trouble trying to explain that weird bit of fanservice in Princess Resurrection to my husband. So I was glad to see that you’d coined such a helpful term to describe it: “mood boobs.” I’m thinking that you ought to trademark the term. It could come in handy when analyzing the cover art of a lot of titles from the DC/Marvel universe.

Hm… it’s definitely worth considering, though I don’t know if the DC/Marvel breasts have enough personality. They never really say “I’m busy” or “I’m happy!” or “I’m sad.” They just kind of say “I’m here.”
